DR ROGER BELL
Vascular & Transplantation Surgeon

I obtained my undergraduate degree from UWA in 1979. I chose a surgical stream and rotated through all the teaching hospitals in WA, receiving my Surgical Fellowship from the College of Surgeons in 1988.

Although I enjoyed and practised the entire range of General surgery, my interest was in Vascular Surgery and Transplantation Surgery. I was the first research fellow for the National Liver Transplant programme in Sydney, where I researched and published many papers looking at aspects of Liver preservation and topics allied to Liver Transplantation, such as vascular complications associated with the procedure.

Prior to becoming a consultant, I spent 12 months as a Senior Lecturer at St Thomas’ Hospital, London, under the supervision of Professor Norman Browse, a highly esteemed Vascular Surgeon, and President of the College of Surgeons.

On returning to WA, I was offered an academic position with the Professorial Unit, where in conjunction with Professor Tony House, I was instrumental in setting up the surgical division of the Liver Transplant Unit in WA. In that era as a junior consultant, I was appointed Head of vascular Surgery at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in WA.

In 2000, I relocated to Melbourne for family reasons, and was appointed to Monash Medical Centre as a Consultant Vascular/ Transplant Surgeon.

My public hospital work is divided between Vascular Surgery and Transplant Surgery, with a heavy emphasis on teaching undergraduates and mentoring Vascular and Transplant trainees.

I established North Western Vascular in 2002, and this remains the site of my private practice. As well as practising the entire range of Vascular procedures, arterial and venous, open and endovascular, I have a special interest in Thoracoscopic sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis and facial blushing, and treating elite athletes with endofibrosis.
